Le Guanahani … an exquisite resort on très chic St Barth

Have you ever happened upon a place while traveling and felt an instant attraction, a strong desire to return and enjoy its pleasures? Well that is exactly what happened to Denis and me while driving in our open-air jeep around the très chic island of St. Barthélemy, otherwise known as St. Bart’s or St. Barth. I had read about the elegant luxury resort on the northeast side of the island, and as we were navigating around the narrow hillside roads of that lovely residential area, we came upon it … Le Guanahani.

We had been cruising and visiting Caribbean islands for a week. This was our last day and our last opportunity to find the perfect resort for future retreats … et voilà, le coup de foudre! We wandered up to the open-air reception desk and asked for a tour of the resort. A charming French woman appeared, Sabine, and took us on a leisurely stroll around this exquisite 18-acre property which offers a feast for the eyes with the vibrant fuschias and corals of the bougainvillea and hibiscus set off by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and the colorful guest cottages situated around the property.

As we moved past the tennis courts from the restorative, full-service spa and the fitness center to the exclusive restaurants to the two magnificent beaches, our fascination grew. We discovered that Le Guanahani is the only resort on the island to offer a full range of services including at least 12 different water sports plus wellness activities and hiking.

As impressive as that is, there was something else captivating us. It wasn’t just the stately French Creole colonial decor, the lush tropical vegetation or the stunning layout of the property with its breathtakingly beautiful beaches nestled between Marigot Bay and Grand Cul-de-Sac. There is an aura about the place, a sense of beauty and love of nature that we hadn’t found elsewhere on our trip.

With its private guest cottages and quiet beaches, Le Guanahani offers an escape from civilization in an oasis of calm. Yet, the excitement beyond its gates in this exclusive paradise of an island is there for the taking as well. So guests can go barefoot around the property or dress to the nines and dance away the night in ultra-trendy Gustavia, the island’s capital.

Our desire to linger was stronger than the pull to continue touring the island, so we stayed on for a light lunch at the resort’s outdoor restaurant, Indigo on the Beach, where we savored the glorious views of both beaches along with our light seafood salads and well-chilled French chablis.

Dessert was the pièce de resistance … house-made sorbet cassis et framboise topped with a light, airy white chocolate mousse and tiny balls of dark chocolate crunch with a touch of sea salt. Refreshingly delicious and very satisfying to the palette.

Open 10 months out of the year, Le Guanahani is renowned for servicing well-heeled travelers who are looking for a luxurious resort to attend to their every need in an ambiance of sheer beauty on an island which offers a true joie de vivre. If you go, you may well find us there as we are definitely planning to return to Le Guanahani to take the restorative cure on their beaches, in their two pools and in the wellness center of this utterly captivating resort. Of course, I think we’ll fit in a little tennis and some shopping at the French boutiques in Gustavia as well! Care to

I have not read about this resort previously but it looks like a winner! The views are spectacular and the grounds look beautiful. I’ve only visited St. Barts from a Windjammer cruise long ago but would love to return for a week-long stay. Le Gauanahani may be the place to do that!
